Now, to find out the details on what’s up this week on The World’s Modern Jazz Radio Channel just read on!
In the Mid-1980’s when fusion had faded and the softer side of things began to permeate the radio with the emergence of contemporary jazz, a fun, up and funky trend sprang out of the clubs and concert halls of England that brought new life to jazz. If you’d like to hear some just listen four times each week to the newest feature on MOJA Radio, THIS IS ACID JAZZ! You can hear it twice every Tuesday at 9 AM and again at 9 PM EST and twice on Sunday’s at 9 AM & 9 PM EST as part of the Sunday Specials. The phrase Acid Jazz came from the famous English DJ Gilles Peterson and each week you’ll hear not only the music of the English groups he discovered, but artists from the USA and around the world that joined in on a movement whose repercussions still reverberate today, and the words of Mr. Peterson himself! So if you can’t get enough of that funky stuff come and get it on THIS IS ACID JAZZ four times each week on MOJA Radio!
Back in the day when rock bands like The Grateful Dead and The Allman Brothers Band took their songs on long, improvised journeys and in essence incorporated jazz elements, the stage was set for what became a major part of what we call MOJA…jambands and especially those who set out primarily to make jazz. If you’d like to hear some just listen five times each week to the newest feature on MOJA Radio, ATTACK OF THE JAZZY JAMBANDS! You can hear it at NOON East/9 AM West every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, plus twice on Sunday at NOON Eastern/9 AM Pacific and Midnight EAST/9 PM West as part of the Sunday Specials. Following The Dead & The Allmans came Phish then grunge from Seattle. At the same time American Acid Jazz artists like Karl Denson & Robert Walter started attracting the same fans. Those fans began to follow Galactic and other new artists from NOLA, Medeski, Martin & Wood, John Scofield and the great artists of the North West like Skerik, and San Francisco-area groove artists like Charlie Hunter & Will Bernard! It’s jazz mixed with prog rock and punk, funk and groove, heavy metal and alternative rock. The fans of this music don’t need lyrics, they need the groove and you’ll get it all if you join us for ATTACK OF THE JAZZY JAMBANDS five times each week on MOJA Radio!
Since the great Charlie Hunter celebrates his 45th birthday on May 23rd, he’s in the spotlight for this week’s edition of LIVE @ MOJALand which happens four times each week here on MOJA Radio as we invite you to join us inside the world’s only imaginary jazz club for rare, live performances by the biggest names in Modern Jazz. Listen Wednesday morning at 9 AM ET and again Wednesday night at 9 PM East/6 PM West, and twice again on Sunday at 11 AM & 11 PM ET, as part of the Sunday Specials. This week we’re renting out a warehouse with one of MOJA’s greatest guitarists and four of his funky friends as they set up shop for CHARLIE HUNTER: RIGHT NOW LIVE. When Charlie released his incredible album Right Now Move in 2003 he was working with a new label and a new group of all-star players including John Ellis on sax, Curtis Fowlkes on trombone, Gregoire Maret on harmonica and drummer Derek Philips. They decided to invite a select group of fans to witness a performance of this new project while they filmed it for a DVD and that’s the experience we want to share with you this week. You’ll hear this great band doing Charlie favorites like “Mestre Tata,” “Changui,” “Whoop-Ass,” and more! It’s CHARLIE HUNTER: RIGHT NOW LIVE on this week’s edition of LIVE @ MOJALand!

Every Friday beginning at 7 AM until midnight Eastern time we’ll begin each hour with a classic piece of Jazz Fusion history with our special feature we call IF IT’S FRIDAY, THIS MUST BE FUSION. This Friday, May 20th, we’ll place a special focus on the birthplace of so much of what we call American music with a special feature we call “THE GREATEST FUSION HITS OF AFRICA!” We’ll treat you to some of the fantastic fusion-era work of greats like South Africa’s Hugh Masekela, Cameroon’s Manu Dibango, supergroup Osibisa led by Teddy Osei from Ghana and the Green Arrows from Zimbabwe. And, of course, we’ll give you the music of the “Father of Afrobeat,” Nigeria’s legendary Fela Kuti, including some new music just discovered by our fellow MOJAN Bob Bresnan which features Fela in collaboration with vibes master Roy Ayers. You’ll hear them all if you join us for this week’s edition of IF IT’S FRIDAY, THIS MUST BE FUSION. It’s “THE GREATEST FUSION HITS OF AFRICA!”
We’re celebrating the 45th birthday of one of MOJA’s greatest on May 23rd, and we’ll celebrate his incredible style and achievements as we present our weekly feature WORDS & MUSIC on MOJA Radio this one titled “CHARLIE HUNTER: GUITAR WIZARD!” How is it that one man can sound like three musicians at once? The answer is Charlie Hunter. Charlie modified the traditional 6-string guitar by adding adding more strings so that he could sound like a bassist, rhythm player and lead guitarist simultaneously. The great John Scofield himself has been quoted as saying that he doesn’t know how he does it and anyone who’s seen Charlie live knows it’s simply amazing. Hear the story of how this came about, how he grew up in the SF Bay area then travelled the world, all the time developing his unique style before unleashing it on the world as a solo artist and member of super-groups like Garage-A-Trois, T.J. Kirk and Groundtruther. Interview segments followed by music will begin each hour from Noon through Midnight Eastern time (9 AM-9 PM Pacific). Join us for “CHARLIE HUNTER: GUITAR WIZARD,” on this week’s WORDS & MUSIC.
And to begin next week…one more blast for Charlie Hunter!
On Monday, May 21st, we’ll present another “Happy Birthday” edition of our special feature, MONDAY WITH THE MASTERS on MOJA Radio. This time the focus is on one of the most popular, active and unique guitarists, composers and bandleaders in MOJA, CHARLIE HUNTER. Two days before Charlie turns 45 we’ll wish him a Happy Birthday and share his story and music with you for an hour. You’ll hear of his beginnings growing up in the San Francisco Bay area, how busking on the streets in Europe helped him formulate the idea to play the 7 and 8 string guitars he’s become so famous for. You’ll also hear some of his many all-star collaborations and his emergence as a leader in the mid-‘90’s. Listen for MONDAY WITH THE MASTERS twice every Monday, at Noon Eastern/9 AM Pacific, with a replay Monday night at 9 PM Eastern/6 PM Pacific and this week we place our spotlight on a musician that is truly one of a kind, the great CHARLIE HUNTER!
